Uncrowned Monarch of the Namib
Kronenlose Herrscherin der Namib

A monograph on a unique African plant with a wonderful array of photographic illustrations, paintings and scientific information for the book connoisseur and collector,
the traveller, the botanist, the gardener or student alike.

Africana

Where:                  Buitenverwachting Restaurant

When:                  Thursday 21 November

Time:                     12h00 for 12h30 (starts promptly)

Speaker:              Authors - Ernst van Jaarsveld and Uschi Pond in conversation

The book is set to become a collector’s item – a limited edition of 1000 copies
Bilingual: English and German

The Uncrowned Monarch of the Namib, Welwitschia mirabilis – is an extraordinary plant, truly one of a kind and found only in the Namib Desert.  It was discovered by Henry Pearson in 1859. No other single plant has aroused the curiosity and attention of so many scientists.

Meet the authors, the much esteemed Kirstenbosch horticulturalist and botanist Dr Ernst van Jaarsveld and Uschi Pond who have put together a truly spectacular celebration of this iconic plant.

A remnant of the past, representing a group of plants which flourished on earth some 125 million years ago. Welwitschia is thus a true living fossil!  Welwitschia is estimated to grow to about 500 -1500 years old.  It is striking in its morphology and physiology, placing it in a family of its own, the Welwitschiaceae.

So as you can see fascinating! It is an exquisite book with its beautiful illustrations and photographs.

‘A must read for any true rugby supporter’ – Nick Mallett

Liz McGregor is a veteran author and journalist who started off her career on leading South African newspapers. She spent two years behind the scenes interviewing the players, coaches, wives and girlfriends, mothers and teachers. She also spoke to the Bok doctor and physio, the sponsors, brand managers and the logistics guy. And then there’s the boss, the South African Rugby Union. What she discovered is as fascinating as it is complex.

Who can forget the excitement of the 1995 World Cup? The Soccer World Cup in 2010? The send-off of the Springboks to the 2011 World Cup?

What makes a champion sports star? Liz McGregor has found the answers which she gives in her book; they probably apply to winning in most spheres and are of interest to all parents and grandparents.

Paul Hoffman SC Guest Speaker at Buitenverwachting

Up to the minute, informative and enjoyable.
Relax with a delicious luncheon at a top restaurant.
A great speaker is the ‘cherry on top’.

The Thursday Club meets once per month, most months. It is not a Club it is a networking of people who enjoy good food; good wine and intelligent conversation. It is open to anyone who is interested in joining us.

The Constitution of South Africa is being constantly challenged! Who better than Advocate Paul Hoffman SC to clarify the situation.  It is an honour and a privilege to host him at our May luncheon.

Thursday 16th May 2013
Buitenverwachting Restaurant
12:00 for 12:30

His topic is How to choose judges for appointment to the Higher Courts.

The quest for a non-racial and non-sexist order in South Africa calls for a transformation of mind-set, not a counting of chromosomes and measuring melanin cells. Perpetuating racism and sexism in the JSC's processes is not what the law intends.”  Paul Hoffman SC in April 2013.

Advocate Paul Hoffman was invited by three successive Judges President of the Cape High Court to grace their Bench as an Acting Judge.  In 2006, after twenty six years of membership, he left the Cape Bar in order to take up an appointment as Director of the Centre of Constitutional Rights.
Its mission to uphold the Constitution dovetails with his personal commitment to the rule of law and the promotion of constitutional democracy.  As director he wrote widely on threats to the Constitution and appeared in the Constitutional Court as amicus curiae.

Since January 2009 he has been pursuing his passion for exacting accountability by setting up IFAISA Institute for Accountability in Southern Africa.

Edgar Osojnik of Buitenverwachting has created a delicious menu for the May Luncheon:

Fascinating luncheon; Fascinating talk!

Date                     Thursday 18th April 2013
Time                     12 noon for 12h30
Where                  Buitenverwachting Restaurant
Speaker               Paul John Myburgh

From the moment I read about Paul John Myburgh I knew that we would all love to share his experience!

Fortunately, Penguin has just released his fascinating book The Bushman Winter Has Come which gives us the opportunity of hearing Paul’s absorbing story…

Guest speaker, Paul John Myburgh, anthropologist and multiple award-winning documentary filmmaker, has had a life-long commitment to Africa that transcends the boundaries of politics and ideology. Apart from many years shared with the First People, he has spent the last sixteen years working on the story of the excavation of the Little Foot fossilised skeleton in the Cradle of Humankind.

He spent seven years with the ‘People of the Great Sand Face’, a group of Gwikwe Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert. But all does not end there.  In The Bushman Winter Has Come, the author imagines a continuing journey towards a place where we may, once again, know who we are in the context of our life on this earth … towards a time when we may answer the Gwikwe’s morning greeting, Tsamkwa/tge? (Are your eyes nicely open?) with a confident yes.

Edgar Osojnik Chef/Patron of Buitenverwachting Restaurant has created a superb menu for this luncheon.

She runs NoMU in partnership with her husband and head of marketing, Paul Raphaely. Tracy has partnered with Penguin Books SA to produce another innovative first for South Africa – the NoMU Recipe Box.  A few special recipes are included and one can add to them...
