BEHIND THE DOOR - MANDY WIENER AND BARRY BATEMAN

Cape Town Launch

The Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp Story

MANDY WIENER AND BARRY BATEMAN

Exclusive content, including interviews, phone messages, photographs and affidavits
‘Behind the Door is definitive, engrossing, fascinating, brilliant and utterly unputdownable.
Wiener has no equal when it comes to true crime, and Bateman’s first-journalist-on-the-crime-scene insight gives it a huge boost.’
DEON MEYER, author of Cobra and other bestselling crime novels

WHEN            Wednesday 5 November at 12 for 12h30WHERE:        Buitenverwachting Restaurant

The news of successful model Reeva Steenkamp’s fatal shooting by her boyfriend and global sporting star Oscar Pistorius stunned the world. Over the ensuing weeks, as Pistorius appeared in court and applied for bail, every detail that emerged was analysed, debated, justified and digested. South Africa and the world in general were haunted by the events as they were repeated and discussed at length. Public perception vacillated from version to version and from hour to hour.
Behind the Door is a compelling narrative that unpacks the true facts of the story, as revealed in the courtroom and beyond during the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius and as told to the authors in several exclusive interviews and behind-the-scenes briefings. It looks at the characters involved, relates the courtroom interactions and dramas, the construction of each side’s argument, the analysis of forensic and circumstantial evidence and exchanges between the personalities, as well as a broader look at violence and criminal justice in South Africa.
Vivid and gripping, insightful and authoritative, Behind the Door is the book to read on the Reeva and Oscar story.

Meet the authors:

MANDY WIENER (@MandyWiener) is an award-winning investigative journalist and author of the true-crime bestseller Killing Kebble: An Underworld Exposed and the acclaimed memoir My Second Initiation (co-written with Advocate Vusi Pikoli). Wiener has been reporting on crime, the courts and politics in South Africa for the past decade.

BARRY BATEMAN (@barrybateman) has been reporting in Pretoria, the hometown of Oscar Pistorius, for more than ten years, for the last four of these as the Pretoria Correspondent for Eyewitness News, for which he has won several awards. Bateman was the first journalist on the scene of the shooting and has been covering every development since.

Where:             Buitenverwachting Restaurant

Time:               12 noon for 12h30
Speaker:          Tim Butcher

Tim Butcher the best-selling British travel writer and broadcaster who is based in Cape Town will be talking about his recently released book The Trigger.   We loved him at Thursday Club when he launched his absorbing first book, Blood River shortly after he and his family had come to  live in South Africa.  We also had the pleasure of launching his second book, Chasing the Devil – The Search for Africa’s Fighting Spirit - a passionate and exciting adventure story.

Tim is one of the most exciting speakers we have had the good fortune of hosting. Be sure to book early for the rare opportunity of listening to this man of great courage and talent.

The Trigger, his third book was launched in the UK in March.  It has been well received and has had great reviews.

On a summer morning in Sarajevo a hundred years ago, a teenage assassin named Gavrilo Princip fired not just the opening shots of the First World War but the starting gun for modern history, when he killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Yet the events Princip triggered were so monumental that his own story has been largely overlooked, his role garbled and motivations misrepresented. Tim Butcher will share the results of years of research, including the discovery of Princip papers missed by a century of historians, to fill out as never before the assassin who changed all of our lives.

David Cameron chose it as one of his 5 books to take on holiday in July.

The Trigger, retails in South Africa at R315 but will be available at the lunch for R250. Payment will be by cash on the day of the talk or by EFT/bank transfer subsequently.

Lunch with Clem Sunter at Buitenverwachting

21st Century Megatrends - how a fox sees them.

What's ahead for the rest of this century?

Date                         Tuesday 10 June 2014
Time                        12 noon for 12h30
Venue                     Buitenverwachting Restaurant
Guest Speaker       Clem Sunter

Join us for lunch with renowned business strategist Clem Sunter.
Clem says, now that we are entering the fifteenth year of the current century, some of the megatrends shaping this century have become evident. As 21st century foxes, these megatrends will apply for all global economic and political scenarios. In other words, they are universal rules of the game, not variables that may or may not come into play depending on which scenario you choose. Moreover, you have to adapt to them because they are all beyond your control.

" ... Decide on appropriate action or have a contingency plan. That is what a fox would do - logically not fearfully, with a sense of purpose not despair." Clem Sunter.

A Gourmet lunch accompanied by Buitenverwachting's elegant wines will cost you R250 per person fully inclusive.

Book launch - Luncheon at Buitenverwachting

Launching The Diving by popular columnist, Helen Walne.
It tells of her tortuous relationship with her brother, Richard, who couldn’t resist the lure of death.

Date                      Thursday 8 May
Time                      12 Noon for 12:30
Venue                  Buitenverwachting Restaurant

Helen Walne was born in England and has lived in South Africa, Argentina and Scotland. An award-winning columnist and writer now based in Cape Town, Helen’s work has appeared in various magazines and newspapers such as The Sunday Times, The Mail & Guardian and Fair Lady, as well as in The Bed Book of Short Stories, published in 2010. You may have enjoyed her regular column in the Cape Argus…

Helen’s book is one you won’t want to put down.  Most of us have had to deal with the death of a loved one, the book is a warm and beautifully written account of her experience.

Beautifully told, it is an achingly personal account of the inner turmoil of those who are left behind after a loved one’s suicide, and of dealing with grief, fear, isolation and depression. But it also tells of hope, recovery and learning to live without the person who has left them. The Diving demystifies the taboos surrounding a topic that little is spoken, let alone written, about.

This moving, sometimes amusing book is the story of letting go of the hand wilfully sliding beneath the surface.

‘An extraordinary exploration of loss and resilience, and a vital read.’
Henrietta Rose-Innes

Prof Tim Noakes - The Real Meal-Revolution

The Real Meal-Revolution

A scientist, a nutritionist, and two chef-athletes - the crack squad behind The Real Meal-Revolution have walked or in some cases run the hard yards.

Authors: Tim Noakes; David Grier; Sally-Ann Creed; Jonno Proudfoot

Foreword by Gary Player: “Make no mistake, this is a food revolution and you have no better guide on this journey than Tim Noakes.”

Published by Quivertree Publications with Exquisite Photography by Craig Fraser

Where:              Buitenverwachting Restaurant

When:              Thursday 30 January

Time:               12h00 for 12h30 (starts promptly)

Speakers:        The Authors in conversation

The Real Meal Revolution is not a book to be read when you’re hungry. Regardless of your preferred style of eating, the recipes in this book are enough to send you scampering to the kitchen, inspired to prepare one of the 130 tasty recipes.

Yet, while the recipes are all equally delectable and delightfully easy to prepare, with only a few ingredients, the book is much more than just recipes. It contains research which backs the high-fat, low carbohydrate style of eating, graphs documenting its success in studies, testimonials from professional sportsmen such as Gary Player, and case studies of ordinary people who have had phenomenal success with the diet.

The tagline on the book “Changing the world, one meal at a time” speaks volumes.

Prof Tim Noakes is back in the news, with the recent launch of this co-authored book, essentially a cookbook, that outlines both the controversial high-fat-protein and no-carb dietary regime he now advocates and recipes to live it. It's called The Real Meal Revolution, and is described by its publishers as "Part myth-busting scientific thriller, part mouth-watering cookbook".

The book contains much of the science behind Noakes' about-turn on conventional beliefs about weight loss, heart health, obesity and cholesterol as well as many other health-related issues.

Noakes contributes the science and rationale behind this diet, while all the recipes in the book have been created by Jonno Proudfoot, an accomplished chef and athlete, and who initiated the whole concept.

Another writer is David Grier, the amazing ultra-athlete who has run for charity around the world. He has a passion for helping children born with cleft palates, and he believes that The Real Meal Revolution will help these children have the operations they need. He is also an author of many of his own books and is an accomplished chef, too.

The fourth writer is Sally-Ann Creed, a nutritional therapist who has qualifications as a 'clinical nutritionist' and who has a high public profile for her takes on what makes for healthy nutrition.

"All of the recipes are beautifully photographed and delicious!

Chef Patron Edgar Osojnik will be preparing a delicious luncheon from Recipes in the book which will be accompanied by Buitenverwachting’s elegant wines.  Menu will be available shortly.

The fully inclusive price for the luncheon is R250 per person.
