It is a privilege to host Dr Helen Robinson at the first luncheon after the winter break of the  Buitenverwachting Restaurant team.  .

Dr Helen Robinson began her professional life as a theatre practitioner and a lecturer in drama and communication.  She settled in Wynberg 35 years ago and has pursued her interest in its multicultural heritage since that time. She did post-graduate studies in Social Anthropology and Psychology while lecturing at the University of Cape Town and received her MA in 1985 for a study on forced removals in Greyton in the Overburg. She then proceeded to a PhD in the History Department where she presented her research on Wynberg. Her thesis was published in 1998 with the title – Beyond the City Limits – People and Property at Wynberg.  Since then she has written many books on the Cape.

Her latest book Constantia and its Neighbours was launched earlier in August.  Dr Robinson is an erudite and enjoyable speaker, You will enjoy every minute of her talk. There will be a question time.

The book is the story of the people of Constantia, free men and women, slaves and their descendants, immigrants and exiles all who have contributed to the international reputation of Constantia wines today.  They were neighbours and frequently related by marriage, which created a complex pattern of cooperation and obligation, but also gave rise to competition, as the wine estates developed and newcomers entered the Valley.

The book will be on sale at a special price of R200 at this luncheon.
