Buitenverwachting Restaurant on Thursday 8 June
Lunch at 12 noon for 12h30

All at Buitenverwachting are enormously excited to be hosting Tony Jackman, journalist and South African playwright, who will be talking about his newly launched book foodSTUFF.

The Book
The cookbook as a memoir or is it the memoir as a cookbook? foodSTUFF is Tony Jackman’s refreshingly original view on life and the food that goes with it. The long-time journalist, playwright and food writer takes you from his beginnings as the son of a working-class family from the north of England to his astonishing success as a truant in his high school days and on to his career as a journalist, husband, father and maverick. Jackman relates every heartache and every joy. foodSTUFF has many meaty recipes, spicy poultry dishes, some of Jackman’s eccentric signature dishes and desserts to spoil his friends with.

The Author
I have been a Tony Jackman fan for so many years that I have lost count…

Way back when he was Editor of the Top of the Times and you had to hurry to get the Cape Times on a Friday because it would be sold out… Tony’s column was a must-read for Capetonians, witty and always up to the minute.

More recently he wrote for the Weekend Argus and was assistant editor of Daily Maverick.  As a playwright, he tackles weightier matters such as atrocities committed during the Boer War, the feud between Olive Schreiner and Cecil John Rhodes and the disparity between rich and poor.
He has written three stage plays; An Audience with Miss Hobhouse (which won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2013) Bloody England and Blue Train Calling.
His Restaurants in Sutherland and Cradock attracted foodies from all over. He has so much talent and is such a special human being that I can’t wait to read his book.

Chef/Patron Edgar Osojnik is also a fan of Jackman and a delicious meal is on the cards to be accompanied by the elegant wines of Buitenverwachting.  The fully inclusive price per person is R375.

We are thrilled to announce that celebrated author Lesley Pearse is in South Africa to promote the launch of the paperback release of Dead to Me her latest novel is set to be released later in the year.
It is a privilege to host her.

The Book
When Ruby and Verity met as girls they came from different worlds. Verity was privately educated, living in a beautiful Hampstead home, while Ruby was being raised in extreme poverty. Nevertheless, they became firm friends.

Fortunes are not set in stone and soon the girls find their situations reversed. As Ruby goes up in the world, Verity encounters more and more tragedy, but still, the girls remain a large part of each other’s lives. That is, until one day in 1038 when Ruby says the terrible words ‘You’re dead to me’ and it looks like their friendship might be over for good…

Lesley Pearse is one of the UK’s best-loved novelists with fans across the globe and sales of over 10 million copies of her books to date. Truth is often stranger than fiction and Lesley’s life has been as packed with drama as her books. She was three when her mother died under tragic circumstances. Her father was away at sea and it was only when a neighbour saw Lesley and her brother playing outside without coats on that suspicion was aroused. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried – a veritable dragon of an ex-army nurse – and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother and a continuing stream of foster children.

The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley’s early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: what happens to those who are emotionally damaged as children…
Her most recent novels include Dead to Me, Without a Trace, Survivor, Forgive Me and The Promise.

Talented chef  Edgar Osojnik promises a lunch which promises deliciousness;
to be accompanied by elegant wines from Buitenverwachting’s talented Winemakers.

The price per person is R330 fully inclusive
