Lunch with Paul Hoffman

Up to the minute, informative and enjoyable.
Relax with a delicious luncheon at a top restaurant.
A great speaker is the ‘cherry on top’.

Guest speaker, Adv. Paul Hoffman SC is a fascinating man.  Brilliant and unconventional you will thoroughly enjoy his talk.  He will take questions. His topic…

Musings of a Maverick Silk

Where:             Buitenverwachting Restaurant
When:              Thursday 22 November 2012
Time:               12 for 12.30

Advocate Paul Hoffman completed his BA LLB at Wits in 1974 and pursued a successful career in many aspects of the legal profession. He took silk in 1995 and continued to practice at the Cape Bar where he headed its advocacy skills training programme.  Three successive Judges President of the Cape High Court invited him to grace their Bench as an Acting Judge.
In 2006, after twenty six years of membership, he left the Cape Bar in order to take up an appointment as Director of the Centre of Constitutional Rights.  Its mission to uphold the Constitution dovetails with his personal commitment to the rule of law and the promotion of constitutional democracy.  As director he wrote widely on threats to the Constitution and appeared in the Constitutional Court as amicus curiae.

Since January 2009 he has been pursuing his passion for exacting accountability by setting up IFAISA the Institute for Accountability in Southern Africa.  He is probably best known for representing Bob Glenister on corruption matters and Terry Crawford Browne in his campaign to get a commission of inquiry into the arms deals.

Browsing the web I came across an open letter he wrote to President Zuma in October this year which he startsWhile it is clearly indisputable that a great deal of progress has been made with the implementation of the type of constitutional democracy envisaged in the final Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which has been in force since February 1997, recent developments suggest that all is not well in the land.

A rare opportunity to meet one of South Africa’s finest legal brains.

Chef Edgar is creating another superb menu which will be circulated shortly. There is a small increase in the cost of the luncheon.  R250 per person fully inclusive.

Call me on 021 685 8016 or email sandybailey@telkomsa.net for information or to book.

Launching My Life with Leopards - Buitenverwachting

MY LIFE WITH LEOPARDS
By
FRANSJE VAN RIEL

The Adventure of a Lifetime
A breath-taking relationship between man and cat

Up to the minute, informative and enjoyable!

Date:       Thursday, 20 September
Venue:     Buitenverwachting Restaurant
Time:       12noon for 12h30 (starting promptly)
Speaker:  Fransje van Riel

Enjoy a delicious gourmet meal (menu below) accompanied by Buitenverwachting’s superb wines.

Talented Constantia author Fransje van Riel has written My Life with Leopards; the poignant story of a man’s dedication to rearing and returning two leopard cubs to the wild.  Graham Cooke was a 22 year old game ranger at Londolozi when charged with this very difficult task.

In 2001, Fransje wrote Life with Darwin and other Baboons; the story of a young woman who dedicates her life to the welfare of orphaned Chacma Baboons.  Her second book The Crowing of the Roosters was nominated for the Alan Paton Award, Africa’s premier non-fiction literary awards, in August 2005.

When asking Fransje what made her write this book, she said that Graham had contacted her after reading her first book about the Chacma Baboons. He had sent her his CV which included a photo of him with a small leopard cub which piqued her interest.  That is when she found out that he had been living with leopards and knew she wanted to do the story!

She said it had taken a long time to write. It hadn’t been easy for Graham to talk about his experiences; he hadn’t told anybody the full story before. Fransje says he is a very guarded person; not unlike a leopard in fact.  The result is the fascinating book which we are privileged to launch at Thursday Club.

Please telephone Sandy on 021 685 8016 to book or per return email sandybailey@telkomsa.net

Pieter de Villiers and Gavin Rich in Conversation at Buitenverwachting

Random House Struik have published the autobiography of controversial ex Springbok coach Pieter de Villiers; Politically Incorrect was written with popular Rugby journalist Gavin Rich; they will be in conversation at our next luncheon…

DATE:                                    Tuesday 26 June 2012
TIME:                                    12H00 for 12h30
VENUE:                                Buitenverwachting Restaurant
SPEAKER:                            Gavin Rich in conversation with Pieter de Villiers

Please note this luncheon takes place on a Tuesday instead of a Thursday.

Throughout his tenure as the first black Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers was in the news, and not always for the right reasons.  His battle to be accepted and respected by the rugby fraternity started from the moment his appointment was announced. In his four years as Bok coach, de Villiers experienced huge successes but he also suffered the ignominy of coming last in the Tri Nations and seeing his World Cup dream shattered by the controversial officiating of referee Bryce Lawrence.

A personal account of his life and career that is as candid, honest and forthright as the man himself, in the nature of the man, this is both a rugby and political book.
Politically Incorrect was written with highly regarded rugby writer Gavin Rich who won the Sasol Springbok Rugby writer of the Year award in 2010.  Gavin was for many years one of Pieter de Villiers’ harshest critics.
They will be in conversation and will take questions.  This promises to be one of our most fascinating luncheons for many years.

Edgar will be spoiling us with a very special menu which I will send out in the next few days.  As always Lars will be spoiling us with a glass or two of Buitenverwachting’s award winning wines. The fully inclusive cost of the luncheon is R225 per person.  Menu available on request.

To book or for more information, please phone me on 021 685 8016 or email per return to sandybailey@telkomsa.net .

VIDA E CAFFE BLOOP!

The other day it was freezing! I was shopping in Cavendish and popped in for one of my favourite Hot Chocolates at Vida e Caffe....  Imagine how shocked I was to receive my drink in a chipped cup by a Barrista who had a heavy sneezing cold...

WHAT IS THE THURSDAY CLUB?

Not really a club, but a group of people who get together on average once per month, usually on a Thursday and run by me.

We meet at a top restaurant in the Constantia Valley where we have a good lunch with some superb wine from the Valley and an interesting and topical speaker.

There is no joining fee; people are either referred or hear about it and go on the mailing list.  A monthly newsletter tells members who the speaker is and where we will be meeting.  To join contact sandybailey@telkomsa.net

Twice a year we do a fundraiser one for the Darling Trust and one for St Lukes Hospice.

Some past speakers; Clem Sunter, Pieter-Dirk Uys, David Klatzow, Tim Noakes, Ina Paarman; we do repeat speakers that have something new to tell us.

Time:
12h00 for 12h30 (starts promptly)
Speaker:
Clem Sunter

For many years, Chairman of Anglo American’s Chairman’s Fund, Clem Sunter is arguably the world’s top scenario planner and leading strategist.

In the late 1980's Clem put together a presentation entitled ‘The World and South Africa in the 1990’s – the two scenarios he offered for South Africa; the ‘High Road’ of negotiation, leading to a political settlement and the ‘Low Road’ of confrontation, leading to a civil war and a wasteland. It is no secret that South Africa took the High Road, leading to worldwide acknowledgement and respect.

The scenarios change dramatically both internationally and in South Africa. It is indeed an honour for The Thursday Club that Clem joins us annually to keep us up to speed.
His three amazing Fox books have been combined into a Trilogy which will be available on the day. (I have all three but can’t wait to get the Trilogy).
We are launching Clem's new book Calling All Foxes – Your Time Has Come.
I can't wait to read it. If I hadn't been a fox as per Clem's early advice, I don't know where I would be now...
Edgar has created a delicious menu for us and this will be accompanied by a glass of Buitenverwachting’s finest!
